- Are PRB belts as good as the
factory original?
It is impossible to confirm every brand, but
comparisons we have done with Panasonic/Technics show the PRB parts to be every
bit as good as the original in terms of dimensions and performance. They will
fit properly and perform well.
- When should I replace my
turntable drive belt?
Usually 3-5 years seems to be the average.
Belts stretch with time. A belts worse enemy is being idle, so run the
turntable occasionally, if you don't play records regularly. Also, check for
signs of slow starting, this is usually caused by belt slip(the result of
stretching). A belt stretched > 5% over its new length should be
replaced.
- Are belts difficult to
replace?
No. Typically, the belt is replaced by removing the platter.
Turn the platter over. There should be an inner ring running around the
platter. Place the belt around this inner ring; it should stay in place all by
itself. Replace the platter. There should be a cut-out in the platter where the
motor drive pulley shows through, get to this position, reach into the cut-out
and pull the belt across and onto the pulley. Replace the turntable rubber mat.
- When should I replace my
needle?
For sapphire every 100 hours, for diamond every 500
hours.
- Is there a way for sure to
know the stylus is worn?
Microscopes can show wear, but by the time
you can see wear on the stylus, that stylus has already done harm to your
records. Studies have shown that the time function is a most reliable indicator
of stylus wear. A good 30X pocket mocroscope will let you see dirt build up and
also you can easily see if the stylus is chipped or cracked. The cantilever can
also be examined this way too. If either show damage, the stylus should be
replaced immediately.
- How often should the stylus be
cleaned?
This depends on the condition of your records. If you keep
your records clean and in sleeves, We reccomend using the Discwasher stylus
cleaner ( with fluid ) before each listening session and a soft dry brushing
before starting each side. If your records are not well kept, use the
Discwasher brush with fluid after each side is finished and consider getting
some kind of record cleaner.
- Are generic needles as good as
factory originals?
Generic parts will fit properly and offer an
economic alternative to the factory original. They don't claim to perform as
well as the original nor will they neccessarily sound the same. There are many
variables in stylus manufacturing that influence the final performance and
sound. If you want to retain the original sound and
performance, you should get the original replacement stylus.
- What is the difference between
LP and 78 needles?
The difference is size. the 78 stylus is 4 times
larger than the LP stylus. This is because the groove dimensions of the 78 disc
are larger. if you place a LP stylus into a 78 groove, the needle will be
resting on the bottom of the groove instead of tracing the groove wall. The
result is lots of surface noise and little sound. Over the years I have seen
many collectors accept this poor sound as simply the fault of the record! Using
the right size stylus is always important.

- What's the difference between
hi fi and DJ styli?
Hi Fi Styli are designed to track lightly giving
good performance while being kind to your records. DJ styli are designed for
rougher handling, back cueing and to stand up to the rigors of the club
environment. For home use, Hi Fi styli will always give the best
sound.
