SOUND PROCESSORS
Thank You For Choosing KAB
TOP INFO HELP
  • What is a Signal Processor?
Signal processors use special circuitry to enhance or alter sound. We have created 3 sub categories here. Sound Enhancers, Equalizers and Sound Restoration devices.
    - Sound Enhancers enhance response or dynamic range. They are used to infuse more life into the sound.
    - Equalizers are frequency contour devices. More flexible then ordinary tone controls. Parametric EQ offer very sophisticated adjustment of bass, midrange and treble.
    - Sound Restoration devices are targeted products especially for restoring the sound of worn recorded media be it tape, vinyl or 78 rpm recordings.
  • Does my system need sound enhancement?
Audiophiles believe that the recording holds all the necessary information and that the playback system should be as simple and sparse as possible. We believe that the recording -and the chain of equipment that made it- is never perfect. There are also personal taste issues and playback system limitations, that make a simple approach to playback often unfulfilling. Sound Enhancers can help you get a handle on these deficiencies and make your music sound much more exciting. If it sounds better, then it is better.
  • How does the Aphex 204 differ from an equalizer?
The Aural Exciter™ is not an equalizer, it is an upper harmonic enhancer. When you turn up your treble control, you boost everything coming through, sound and noise. When you activate the 204, only upper harmonics of the fundamental sound are enhanced. This goes equally well for the Big Bottom™ bass processor. When you turn up your bass control everything in that range is enhanced, both quiet and loud bass sounds. The Big Bottom is a triggered bass enhancer. Below the set threshold, it does not affect the sound at all.
  • How is compression useful in a home system?
Compression is very useful when making recordings for the car. Compressing the sound enables it to sound much better in a noisy environment. For home playback, light compression lets you play louder, this has the affect of making the quiet sounds more easily heard. The affect is a sense of increased detail.
  • What are Equalizers?
Equalizers are specialized tone controls. You are probably familiar with the more typical graphic equalizer with its array of slider controls. Our equalizers are called parametric because they give you more control over the EQ affect. The graphic slider lets you boost or cut a fixed frequency, parametric's let you choose the frequency, how wide the affect is and how much or how little. They are much more flexible. Equalizers let you make changes to the sound and to correct for speaker or room resonances.
  • Isn't Sound Restoration for Professionals?
No, not just professionals. Our gear is selected to appeal to the do it your selfer. Most of our customers are record collectors who want to transfer a library of records to CD or tape. Our stand-alone analog gear is the fastest and easiest way to do it. Our equipment will connect to your existing stereo equipment. No computers are required.
  • Why do my speakers jump in and out when I play records?
You are seeing what is commonly called "rumble". This is very low frequency energy much of which is cut in the groove by the disc cutting process.
This can and should be removed carefully so the bass is not affected. The device that does this is called a rumble filter. This filter will have a very steep cut-off around 20 Hz and may use advanced canceleing techniques to supress both lateral and vertical rumble. Done properly, fidelity will improve because there will be less IM distortion from the speakers, and reduced affects of acoustic feedback.
KAB has a very hi performance rumble filter model RF-1.

FAQ TOP HELP
Basic tone controls are signal processors most people are familiar with. The Loudness button is another one. But these are static controls in that they boost everything that comes through. True signal processors use some degree of sophistication to enhance their behavior.

Active signal processing can do some very impressive things. For instance, the Aphex 204 Big Bottom circuit can enhance bass impact and foundation without requiring more power from your amplifier or placing greater demands on the speakers! Signal processing is the secret.

Tone control has its place and equalizers are the logical extension of the basic bass and treble control. Graphic equalizers are the most common with their array of sliders. Our equalizers are parametric giving the user more flexibility over the shape of the equalization curve.

Sound restoration rounds out our signal processing category. Restoration is the art of making worn recorded media sound better again. Denoising, Declicking, and Equalizing are all part of the restoration process. Our products are stand-alone devices that connect to your existing stereo. No computers are required.

The addition of mixers is a logical continuation of the sound processing section. Mixers let you take many sources and blend them together either to play simultaneously or to fade from one to another. The Vestax DA-1000 is a new entry which incorporates the concept of DJ mixing with many home audio features. The X1000 makes a great front end for digital transfer work or just a hi end component amplifier. Use your imagination!
