Perhaps the worlds most popular turntable, the Technics 1200 MK2 was borne of technology developed during the discrete quadraphonic era of the mid 1970's. The challenge at this time was precise rotation, and the ablility to trace modulations of up to 50 Khz to the inside groove. This required high precision drive systems, non resonant body structures and very sensitive tonearms. It is no wonder that even today, the '1200 stands practically alone in its unwavering technical performance.
Historically, Quartz locked direct drive was developed, first for half speed mastering of quad recordings, and then for playing them back. The DJ applications followed later when the public refused to accept quad. The fortunate happenstance of the Disco movement, and the need for a 'table that offered precision and stability, found a new home for the '1200. Those events are singly responsible for keeping the cost of this technology ridiculously low.
KAB would like to take some responsibility for setting the historical record straight and for re-introducing the '1200 to the audiophile arena, where it first began 22 years ago.
